Notice Writing Format: Rules and 10 Examples for Class 6 to 12

Updated

The notice writing format explained with the boxed layout, word limit, marking tips and 10 solved examples for school exams.

Students practising the notice writing format in their notebooks

The notice writing format is the fixed layout schools teach for short, formal announcements: the institution’s name, the word NOTICE, the date, a heading, a short body and the writer’s name and designation, all inside a box. In the CBSE Class 12 English Core paper, a notice carries 4 marks and should stay close to 50 words, so the layout matters as much as the content.

This guide explains each part, the five questions every notice must answer, and 10 solved examples you can practise from.

Key Takeaways

  • Put the whole notice inside a box; many teachers deduct marks if it is missing.
  • Order: institution name, NOTICE, date, heading, body, name and designation.
  • Answer what, when, where, who and how (contact or registration) in the body.
  • Keep it to about 50 words in the CBSE Class 12 exam, and never exceed the word limit your board sets.
  • Write in the passive or impersonal voice where natural, for example “All students are informed”.

What Is a Notice?

A notice is a short written announcement that informs a group of people about an event, a change, a lost item or an instruction. Schools, colleges, housing societies and offices put notices on notice boards. Because readers glance at them quickly, a notice must be brief, clear and easy to scan.

Common Mistakes in Notice Writing

  • No box. The notice writing format always needs a box around the notice.
  • Missing designation. Write “Sports Captain” or “Secretary”, not only your name.
  • Too long. The notice writing format is brief, so cut adjectives and repeated words to stay within the limit.
  • Letter-style greetings. Notices never start with “Dear students”.
  • Incomplete details. Forgetting the time or venue loses content marks.
